Lethal Birdbath

In 2010 I received 1st place in a California art competition for this environmental piece titled “Lethal Birdbath,”  which aims to challenge our dependence on fossil fuels by highlighting the ecological harm of oil spills.

This metamorphosis style drawing was created in direct response to the calamitous Exxon Mobile oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. This oil spill was particularly devastating due to the massive size of the spill, and personally heartbreaking, as I spent numerous summers as a child swimming in the Gulf of Mexico while visiting my grandparents in Galveston, Texas. The gulf was a perfect playground for a child, abundant with wild life including birds, fish, and dolphins. Likewise, the oil spill severely impacted the livelihoods of these wild animals, destroying their native habitat.
